What is an Intern Midwife
A home-birth midwife is trained through a hands on apprenticeship with a licensed professional midwife, called a preceptor. In the state of Colorado, the preceptor is state licensed (RM), and often is also certified through the North American Registry of Midwives(NARM). A midwife with these credentials is a CPM. Certified Professional Midwife.
After working for years in an apprenticeship, the midwife apprentice reaches a point when she must attend 20 births as the primary care provider, under the supervision of the "senior" midwife/ preceptor.
The intern provides the same care as a licensed professional midwife, which includes:
* An initial free visit
* Childbirth education, including nutritional, labor and birth options
* Pregnancy, labor and birth support
* Monitors vital health factors, to help keep mother and baby low risk
* Prenatals start as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy, up to the birth
* Attendance of the labor and birth
* Immediate postpartum, up to 6 weeks postpartum
